Reflexology
Reflexology is a holistic treatment which aims to help restore and maintain the body’s own natural healthy balance, by relieving tension, improving circulation and eliminating toxins. It is suitable for all ages, and may bring relief from a wide range of conditions. It can be used alongside conventional medical care to help improve wellbeing.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy which has its origins in Ancient Egypt, China and India, although it did not emerge in the West until the early 20th Century, when Dr William Fitzgerald’s work on linking reflex areas in the hands and feet to other parts of the body was introduced as ‘zone therapy’ in 1913. This theory was then further developed by Eunice Ingham, into reflexology as it is more commonly recognised today.
Both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and reflexology are based on the theory that the body has a number of energy channels running through it, starting and ending in the feet and hands. In TCM, these energy channels are known as meridians. Blockages along these channels can be indicative of stress or ill health. Reflexology uses pressure to stimulate different reflex points on the feet or hands, which correspond to different parts of the body. Therefore, by stimulating reflex points on the feet and hands, the whole body, including all its organs and systems, can be treated. By integrating Meridian Therapy and reflexology, it may be possible to enhance treatment and understanding of emotional and physical states.

Hot Stone Reflexology incorporates hot stones into a reflexology treatment. Large Basalt stones (volcanic stones which retain their temperature) are heated and used to warm and massage the lower legs and feet, and heat each reflex before it is worked with either smaller stones or hands.
Ancient civilisations believed that hot stones cleansed the body and relaxed the heart; grounding the soul and soothing the mind. Hot stone massage is thought to have originated in China and India, and has been used for centuries. The use of heat from the hot stones serves to enhance the reflexology treatment, which can be extremely relaxing for the client.

Reflexology is a holistic treatment which aims to help restore and maintain the body’s own natural, healthy balance by relieving tension, improving circulation and flow of lymph, thus eliminating toxins. The treatment, as with other holistic treatments, helps the body to relax and allows the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes rest, digest and repair) to take control.

Before your first treatment, I will complete a brief checklist to ensure suitability for treatment. The treatment itself requires removal of shoes and socks, and access to lower legs, while you lay on a treatment couch. It is helpful if you wear loose fitting trousers which can be rolled up to the knee. The treatment will last approximately 50minutes.
Clients usually feel relaxed during, and following, a hot stone reflexology treatment, Incorporating heat can mean a deeper treatment can be given, so you may find that your body may respond more intensely – make sure you drink lots of water after your treatment to help your body flush out any toxins. Remember, this is your time to relax, away from the stresses and strains of modern life – so just lie back and enjoy!
*The use of hot stones is not advised for some inflammatory conditions, however cold stones, and other holistic treatments that I offer may still be an alternative. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions!
